Jesus gave his disciples the gift of the Lord’s Prayer at a time when traditional Jewish worship involved onerous requirements such as doing purifications and buying offerings at the temple. If you were a worker or a mother, you still had to find time to go to the temple to pray. But Jesus gave his disciples the gift of the Lord’s prayer as a way to connect with God in just a few lines, right there amid the dust and heat of the day of Israel.
The Lord’s Prayer praises God and his kingdom, then transitions to asking for our human needs such as for food, forgiveness, and protection from temptation and evil, all in a few lines. You might say it covers all the bases. Among the workers and common people, Jesus gave this gift of a short prayer that could be prayed anywhere, while working, cooking, lying in bed, rising in the morning, plowing the fields, or caring for children. It was simple, and it could be prayed anywhere.
In fact, Jesus also said that God knows what you need before you even ask for it, so even words are not needed for prayer, but simply being present with an open heart (Matthew 6:7-15). Amen.
