I have been sick for a time, and recovery is slow. In my prayer, Jesus said, “Don’t you know that having a human body means that there is always something uncomfortable or broken? You know that I had holes in my hands, feet, and side. St. Teresa of Avila had migraines, not to mention her paralytic illness as a young woman. St. Ignatius was so badly wounded in battle that he had to lie in bed for a year. St. Julian of Norwich almost died of the plague, but then God gave her visions of wisdom and truth.
“When God created human beings, he designed the human body to function wondrously. Yet there is always some discomfort. There is always an edge – the human being created in the image of God, but if there was no pain, we could get lost in enjoyment and pleasure in the heavenly realm and lose our awareness. We would be no good to anyone or anything, just dreaming in the heavenly realm of pleasure and comfort. Discomfort keeps us awake, and this is what makes us human. That is the human condition and the human path, and it is not to be regretted, but rather respected.” Amen.
