What can we do in these dark times when unspeakable crimes, power grabs, and tremendous wealth oppress the people, with callous disregard even for innocent, helpless children?
Contemplating Christ, see the light in his heart. Transplant the light from Christ’s heart to our own, and shine forth this light of Christ, even in dark times, especially in dark times. Pack those lunches, carry those groceries, care for those who are unhoused or food insecure as if they are your own family. Look at each person as a treasure, a human being created by God and now entrusted to our community to care for. Lift our voices, march with our feet, lending helping hands. We are not powerless at all.
To be sure, Jesus feels sorrow for this heavy darkness of corruption, for the demonic activities that are now coming more to light, for those who sold their souls for power, quite literally. We avert our eyes; it is too much to think about such unspeakable horrors.
But this heavy sorrow about the state of the world, and this aversion to such evil, need not make us paralyzed with uncertainty. The light still shines in the darkness. Join points of light, join hands. Keep the light alive. As we’ve said before, keep the flame of kindness alive. Amen.
