Today Christ gathers to his heart the martyrs who were murdered as they tried to help others withstand the onslaughts of oppression. He gathers their bloodied bodies in his arms, those whose deaths we know about and those who we don’t know about yet. He knows their wounds well, as he was also murdered by the oppressors, the soldiers doing the bidding of the authorities in power.

Tears fall from his eyes, tears for the pain they have suffered and for the pain of those left behind. But he wants us to know that he holds their souls safe, enfolded in his love. Likewise, he holds all who seek to do good within the soft folds of his robe, enveloped in his love and comforting protection.
