December 10, 2025, Matthew 11:28-30
Today’s topic is rest. In the midst of busy modern life, especially the holiday season, these words are precious: “Jesus said…”Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest…learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves…”
Whenever we sit down to pray or meditate and we are simply being, we are automatically connected with God who is BEING. We are created to simply be and there is wisdom in that. Meekness and humility of heart that Jesus mentions mean that ambition and striving for success are not necessary. Rather, we can find rest in our hearts, knowing we are enough already, and we are as we should be. Even in a busy day, we can take a moment to sit down and be in prayer or meditation. So often, we may look for rest in diversions. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it’s not as restful as finding rest in our hearts.
Once we sit down to pray or meditate, we are connected with God. The angels gently protect us and guide us. The connection is eternal. Once we have made the connection with God in our lives, from then on that connection is there, whether we are aware of it or not, so we do not need to be anxious about that. God is not going anywhere. That connection is like a timeless tunnel, a tunnel beyond time connecting us with Jesus, and thus eternal. Even if we turn from it, when we turn back it is still there.
In that way, it is comforting, since we can always turn to this source of peace. Not much is expected of us – simply be in that space.
Amen.
