October 14, 2025, Luke 11:37-41

We spend a lot of time cleaning and organizing our external surroundings – our dishes, kitchen, desk, office, playroom, yard. But we may be at a loss how to clean and tidy our inner world. Jesus reminds us that “the maker of the outside also [made] the inside,” meaning God. Jesus also tell us how to do this cleaning and tidying of our inner world: “As to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

There are two parts to this guidance. One, when we are generous and giving, we are less focused on our own desires. This is a proven path to happiness. Two, Jesus says “behold!” which means that this change in attitude can be instant. It takes no time at all to turn from dwelling on what we think will make us happy to instead serving others. “Give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”  The switch can be that fast.

Just so, God is always there. Jesus and the angels are always there.  We only need to take a moment to turn our attention to them. Instant awareness of God takes no time at all. Amen.
