In the face of so much injustice, starvation, warfare, and conflict in the world, are we all suffering from collective survivor’s guilt? We send our donations, we hold up signs but feel powerless in the face of the tsunami wave of evil. There is no quick remedy for this, no easy answers, no instant spiritual refuge. Human beings, as inherently spiritual beings, do feel the pain, even if we try to avoid it, shove it down, or cover it up with distractions. This oppression of the powerless and poor is creating collective angst, along with climate change and pollution.
We can’t give up, but rather preserve oases of kindness and sanity, along with gardens of care for the earth’s creatures. We live in a dark time; act accordingly. As the early Christians met underground in the catacombs, as they passed bread, wine, and oil in a secret Eucharist, by our quiet signs we will know one another, the peace and justice keepers. It may be some seeds, some food, some refuge that we offer, or even a kind word. These are the resistance. That is all for now. Amen, amen.
