Discern God’s will

Matthew 7:21-29

Today Jesus continues his admonitions that our actions and behavior are much more important than the words we say, and that what we do should be guided by the will of God. In his teaching, today Jesus says that just calling on him by saying “Lord, Lord,” will not in itself lead to entering the Kingdom of Heaven.  Only doing the will of God will do that.

He predicts that many will say they did “mighty deeds” in Jesus’ name, like prophesying, driving out demons, and so on. These are actions that in their own estimation are important, “mighty,” and impressive. Perhaps they are even proud of what they did. But in response, Jesus says, “I never knew you.”  What does this mean?

It means that first, sometimes we need to listen in quietness as we seek discernment of the will of God. It means in all humility to see what assignment God has set before us, in all simplicity, with less scurrying around in self-importance. That is his will.  Sometimes this is inconvenient, irksome, lowly work. It may be packing lunches or carrying boxes of groceries. It may have nothing to do with politics. We may be serving people of all backgrounds, those we don’t agree with, those who are hard to be around. It might mean scrubbing floors. Maybe we don’t feel like it, but we show up with Jesus in our hearts.  This is blessed work.  That is all.
