We are the Body of Christ

June 15, 2025

Today was Trinity Sunday.  At church, in contemplation I saw that Jesus’ body was healthy, beautiful, and well formed when he was on earth. He was comfortable in his body, he was strong, flexible, and still relatively young and energetic. In those days, people did not have the burden of chemical and industrial pollution affecting their bodies and allergies were rare. Thus, Jesus had a feeling of physical well-being. And so it was that due to his strength, when he was tortured and killed, it took a lot of scourging and beating to cause his spirit to leave his body.

Now we followers of Jesus who gather together in community, we are his body on earth. We are his voice, his hands and his feet, to care for others, to speak out, to take care of the poor, hungry, and sick, and to do all the things that he did here on earth.  All these activities are best done in community, in collegial companionship, as it is much harder to do them alone. Together, we are the body of Christ, whether in the formal church or in less formal communities that express mercy and do acts of mercy. As Jesus said, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20).

Like Jesus, we may feel well being in our bodies; God wants us to be healthy whenever possible. And like Jesus, the church or community should be strong, flexible, energetic, fluid as if well hydrated, responsive. The community of followers should be like the body of Jesus, responding to needs and moving flexibly and energetically as the Holy Spirit directs us.  That is all for today.
