John 16:12-15
Today’s Scripture passage tells us plainly to listen for the words and promptings of the Holy Spirit: “When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.” Jesus says that the Holy Spirit will glorify Christ and share his truth and the Father’s truth.
Not only in biblical times, but right up through the present, timelessly, the Holy Spirit continues to move among us. Sometimes whispering, sometimes shouting, depending on the urgency. We are asked to listen closely for the words and intimations of the Holy Spirit. Even now, we are sometimes warned of “the things that are coming,” so that we may turn all things to God in prayer.
How to hear the Spirit of truth? There are many ways: in sincere and genuine prayer; in centering prayer or quiet meditation; in devotional practices such as the Rosary or Adoration of the Eucharist; in a nature hike; in the middle of the night; in a dream. Focus and listen, don’t be afraid of silence or time alone. That is all for now.
