John 10:1-10
The theme of the Good Shepherd continues, but here Jesus is both the shepherd and the gate to life, the way of eternal life. When God calls us by name, we hear his voice. God hears our voices too, and in this there is mutual recognition. By listening, listening in the stillness for that still small voice, we hear which way to go. The sheep follow the shepherd because they recognize his voice.
Anyone who takes shortcuts by climbing over the walls of the corral is not showing the true way. The true way is not always easy. We may be angry, we may be tempted to take things into our own hands, say and do hurtful things. Sometimes there is pain in our hearts. Sometimes it is hard to listen to the quiet voice of peace. But this is our practice and this is our way. We listen and listen, and follow.
[Not done yet.] Big events are coming. The election of the new pope has created an energy wave. Pay close attention so we can help that wave slosh back against the cruel ways of oppressing the poor and vulnerable and of plundering the earth. We will all push together. That is so.
