Trust in the Light

John 8:12-20

No matter how dark these times may seem (and humanity has been through many dark times dominated by malevolent men), Jesus gives us hope when he says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  It is comforting that we can focus on the light that gives life in the midst of great turmoil.

In this reading, the Pharisees continue to challenge Jesus, wanting some kind of proof that he is the Son of God. As Jesus says, they are judging by appearances, which he does not, and they do not know him or his Father.  Here he is touching on the teachings of God in three persons, as the Holy Spirit is added in other places.  Jesus speaks his truth because he has no choice.

On the side of the light, I am hearing that we should rejoice in the spring coming to the northern hemisphere, the trees budding out and grass growing, the birds singing after rain.  We do not know how much longer nature will continue to have moments of flourishing – perhaps five more years before things become very difficult. Yet every action we take now to nurture life and care for nature is an act of resistance.  Every vegetable or fruit we grow to share with neighbors is a positive act that goes toward Light and Life.  God sees us, the resistance, stewarding the earth as he asked, each in our own small way, and these efforts are blessed.  Do not lose hope, but continue on with our acts of resistance, at times, quietly, meditatively, prayerfully caring for the plants and animals who need us.

Amen.
