How do we gain clear vision?

Matthew 9:27-31

In today’s reading, two blind men follow after Jesus, crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” Even after he enters a house, they approach him. Jesus asked them if they believe he can do this, and they reply yes.  Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”  Then “their eyes were opened,” and they could see.  He wanted them not to tell anyone, but they spread the word of him through all the land anyway.

The four major elements of this story are first, that the two blind men continued to call out to Jesus and to follow after him without giving up, asking for him to have pity on them and help them.  Second, there is their unshakeable confidence that Jesus would be able to heal them.  Third, it is Jesus’ touch that heals them. Contact with the Lord is healing.  And fourth, as he does elsewhere, Jesus says that their faith is what allows healing.  Faith is the connector to the healing power of God.  Faith is the open channel from our heart to the heart of God.

Now in our modern times, people are crying out for vision of a different kind – the vision to understand how to navigate our complex times.  No administration or regime is all good or all bad.  In the midst of this complexity and information overload, we cry out for guidance on where our lives fit in and where to go next.  We pray for clear vision to know right from wrong.  Sometimes there are no clear easy answers.  May we gain clear vision according to our faith. Amen.
