John 18:33b-37
Today Jesus explains again that the Kingdom of God is not of this world. “My kingdom is not here.” Rather, he brings a kingdom of truth: “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Jesus did not come to found a just government. He did not serve in the halls of power. We should remember this as we encounter the imperfections and abuses of power of those who govern. The Kingdom of God is the kingdom of truth, God’s truth. And truth can be unsettling to those in power. In a way, they are fundamentally opposed (unless it is a true servant leader, by definition temporary). Let us remember to dwell in the kingdom of truth, peace, and justice.
