Luke 12:39-48
The spiritual meaning of this passage continues on from yesterday’s, that is, to remain in the moment with open heart, attentive to God’s presence and communication. When Jesus says to be ready as an owner of a house is on guard against a thief, not knowing when someone could try to break in, and just so, we also must be ready to hear God’s voice at all times. For us now in the present time, when Jesus says “the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour,” this mainly means remain attentive because we don’t know when the Holy Spirit may communicate with us, and secondly, keep steady in prioritizing our relationship with God because we do not know when death could come to us unexpectedly.
Peter goes on to ask Jesus whether this parable and advice is for everyone or just for the disciples. Jesus’ reply indicates that it is for everyone, but the responsibility and consequences are even greater for those like Peter and the disciples who are charged with helping others to connect with God. Leaving aside the “punishment” language of the time because fear is not useful here, the story brings the message that when we know or sense God’s will, if we ignore it and indulge ourselves, thinking it will be OK because we will have plenty of time later to tune in, that can bring harm to both ourselves and others. God’s will be done, both in caring for others and caring for ourselves.
It is a blessed task to try to record the words carefully. Amen.
