First, making the sign of the Cross at the start of my Lectio Divina practice, with Father at the forehead, Son at the heart center, and Holy Spirit from left to right, I heard the meaning is, Father is above and vast, Son is the heart and therefore love, and Holy Spirit moves across the land. 

Then I was reminded of a message I received about the Cross when I was much younger and still Buddhist I believe or maybe even before that, that the Cross extends out in all directions, with the upright beam representing north and south, and the crossbeam representing east and west, and therefore it extends throughout the universe.
