Luke 12:13-21
Today Jesus tells us plainly a warning against materialism, consumerism, and greed. “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” He tells the parable of a rich man who stored up enough treasure to retire comfortably, but God said to the man, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, who will they be?” Jesus concludes, “So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”
This does not mean give up your 401k or IRA that you may need when you are old. It means think where our priorities are, both ourselves and as a society. We already know that consumerism – fast fashion, plastics, food waste – are plundering mother earth and causing climate and ecosystem imbalances that lead to suffering for human beings and for all creation. We already know that phone addictions lead to mental health issues such as anxiety, loneliness, and depression. Let us set ourselves free from addiction to consumerism. We will feel so liberated, it is true. For our own peace of mind, for the planet, think each day what we would be fine without. Care for those small leftovers from a meal, mend the garment, fix the car. It matters and is wholesome for our own well being as well. Amen.
