Christ with the Shield of Peace and Justice

The tip of the spear is to wake people up.  It has a sharpness that can wake you.  Sometimes it can even draw blood, not much, just a little like a finger prick.

The spear can be swung around your head to get attention and to draw attention to an issue, such as a social justice cause.

The staff of the spear can be pounded on the ground, thump thump thump, to say no! no! no! to conflict and injustice.

The shield can be a mirror, reflecting clearly and also brilliantly what is happening.  The shield is not just for protection from evil or conflict, although that can be part of it, but is also a brilliant shining mirror that is visible from all sides.

The shield is also a beacon, giving off bright white light, which is a guide toward the ideals of peace and justice.  It shows which way to go.

The shield has a brown leather strap in back, through which Jesus’ arm is slipped to hold it.  The leather signifies that this is a human, earthly situation, and it is not just spiritual or ethereal but has a human, pragmatic, grounded connection.

The bolts on the back of the shield are the nuts and bolts of the situation.

Now he is standing.  Jesus’ robe is a simple, a coarse brown linen weave, which signifies poverty.  That is, it does not require money to pursue peace and justice.

Beneath his robe he has sweat, because he is human (and divine).

He can turn all the way around, meaning his awareness and pursuit of peace and justice is 360 degrees, all inclusive.

His hair is growing, it still grows, meaning the pursuit of peace and justice is an ongoing process.

The dust on his feet shows how his feet mingle with the dust of the earth.  People touch these same dusty feet and are cured of illness, whether physical, mental, or spiritual.  This means that mingling with the dust does not inhibit spirituality or activism. (I believe there is more to see here but time was running short in our session and perhaps my attention was flagging.)

Finally his eyes look very intently at me, to say that this is not just symbolism but very important for action to prevent a lot of pain and suffering.  Then he straightens up with the shield in front and the spear upright to his left and he stands very tall, at attention, with his eyes continuing to look out very strongly and intently, for the sake of peace and justice.
